As part of the ongoing brand and product strategy, Pearson is changing the name of two of their products:

• PTE General will become the Pearson English International Certificate

• PTE Young Learners will become the Pearson English International Certificate - Young Learners

Although the names are changing, there are no changes being made to the tests themselves. The format, length, question types and assessment standards all remain as they are, and you will be able to use the test for the same purposes.

Furthermore, the Pearson English International Certificate will continue to be an Ofqual approved and regulated product.

The names for these two products will officially change from Q4 2020. Those students who have already taken the test as ‘PTE General’ will continue to be able to use their scores for recognition and acceptance purposes as normal.

Pearson Test of English Young Learners

PTE Young Learners is an assessment solution to suit students from pre-A1 to A2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference, at four different levels of English language proficiency.

If you are teaching the PTE Young Learners exams, we have a range of past papers to help you prepare students.

About our Scores

Using an online marking system (e-Pen) and a web-based test center service system, Pearson provides fast and helpful feedback on individual performance of students in the tests.

Detailed feedback is provided in the form of a candidate performance report, which includes a breakdown of the scores for listening, speaking, reading and writing. These are sent to the test centres who distribute them accordingly.

The grades awarded for the test are Distinction, Merit or Pass. If test takers do not achieve a Pass grade, they receive a candidate performance report, but not a certificate.

General Information PTE G

Pearson Test of English General (PTE General) is designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning.

PTE General consists of two parts: a written paper and a spoken test.

  • The written paper tests listening, reading comprehension and writing skills and is marked by external examiners in the UK.

  • The spoken test is assessed by trained local examiners and is sent to the UK for moderation.

There are six levels which are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF). All levels in the test are awarded by Edexcel and accredited by Ofqual in the UK.

PTE General certificates do not expire. English language learners are encouraged to seek opportunities to practice the language and confirm their progress regularly.
